El Paso, Texas' Sparta is the newest and bst band to come out of the southwest in a while. This band is composed of 3/5 of the now defunct band At The Drive-in. But one word of advice.. do not compare the two. Sparta is a new band, a new sound, a new beginning. You can hear some reflections of ATDI, but all in all, they are a whole new sound. Singer Jim Ward played rythm guitar in ATDI, and now takes over as head vocals and lead/rythm guitar. He has at times a Fugazi-esque vocal range, but a scream and sound all his own at the same time.
This album has no set speed, it has fast hard songs, and slower songs that u can relax to, feel the emotion, and bust out singing too. (recommended in the shower).
The album starts with a burst from the track "Cut Your Ribbon", then slows down for a song. It ranges from faster, more scratchy vocal songs, to melodic singing. It is a musical masterpiece that will put these guys in the well-deserved spotlight.
Not many bands have the heart to do rock and roll for the love of it anymore. Not many bands put forth a valid effort to do music from their heart and soul. Not many bands are worth valuable time. Not many bands are worth a hear. Sparta changes all that. Sparta changes music.
