So, Wolf Parade has signed with Sub-Pop Records, the home of the Shins, Postal Service, and Ugly Casanova and other sub-pop delights. What an aptly named record label! Wolf Parade was brought to my attention this past winter by a friend of mine who swore by them...I said "You're crazy, there's no such band as Wolf Parade." I said that after I looked into them and tried to get some of their stuff, nobody had anything by them! They apparently released their own stuff & weren't on a real label. But now...Sub-Pop will release their first full-length in September of this year giving us this 4 song EP as a teaser.
What a teaser! I do believe that Wolf Parade is indeed the bastard child of Q and not U and Arcade Fire. There are multi-instrumental efforts which are reminiscient of the recent Canadian wave of music and there's that DC math rock edge that's attributed to such bands reviewed by our very own Chris Polansky. Wolf Parade has a melodic approach to disturbing unnatural music, you might be put off at first but then your foot automatically keeps beat, it's a wonderful thing! The first song, Shine a Light is a wonderful little ditty which sounds like it was recorded in a garage. You Are a Runner and I Am My Father's Son is influenced by geometry and other absolute sciences, very structured and march-like.
The music and quality, in general, is not produced to the degree it could have been produced - which may very well be a good thing. If Wolf Parade recruited Ric Ocasek or Rick Rubin (or someone of that pristine producing calibur) then I believe this album would be rubbish. The beauty of the EP, and what I expect of their LP, is that it seems honest and unpolished. Sounds blend and buzz with one another and sometimes seem to clash.
Otherwise, the EP is a very cool look into what we can expect from the full album and Wolf Parade's career. I suggest you buy the entire album when it comes out...you might be able to hold off on this EP simply because there's no insight into whether all of these songs will be on the album or just one. But, if you need your Wolf Parade fix now (like most of us from generation gratification) you should run out now! NOW!
