These lo-fi rock and rollers don't give a hoot if it's been done. They don't give a holler if it's been overdone, they've overdid what's been overdone and making it overdittilicious. From the fuzz-induced vocals reminiscient of The Strokes on Just Drums, or the acoustic guitars and odd keys reminiscient of The Shins on The Iliad these kids can make simple...fun. Not to say that Tapes 'N Tapes is merely simple, they're far more than that...they're unidentifiable, uncategorible, and spastic. Each song is different from the rest.
The album has eleven songs, all of which have a garage feel to them. But I can't tell if they were purposely produced in such a fashion or not, embodying a mid-1960s feel with an early '90s attitude. Very 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' meets 'Slanted and Enchanted' and it leaves me confused. In fact, the whole album leaves me befuddled wishing these guys would find a niche and be happy with it, but so very happy they didn't. In Houston captures a lot of the album in one song; fuzz, garagey, melodic, odd, and fun.
These guys will no doubt have more to offer in the near future and you should keep an eye on them. Their next release will be a doozey, you heard it here first. But, jump on this train before it leaves port, or something like that.
